Curated content is a great way to scale up a content marketing program while maximizing both your internal team’s time as well as the cost of content production.
Doing it right is critical to ensuring that the curated content you create and how you create it actually benefits your program.
What does curated content mean?
Curated content is content that you have not created yourself. It is publicly available on other websites, and visitors to those websites can see it.
There is an important distinction here. Curated content that is behind a firewall and content that is publicly available are different. What you are doing here is taking a small snippet of the content from its original location and incorporating it into either a social post or a much larger article.
Is it dangerous to incorporate curated content into original content?
Yes, it can be. If you’re merely citing the source and providing a brief original summary of what the source covers, it’s fine. However, if you’re blatantly copying entire passages of the content itself, you run a significant risk of copyright violation.
Anything more than a brief quote or citation can also incur a duplicate content penalty from the search engines. Both of these can hurt your company financially and dramatically impair your content marketing program.
What privileges can the curated content give to your program?
Curated content is an excellent way of filling in the gaps within your content marketing program. Most companies can’t create an entire library of content that covers every single niche topic within their industry segment.
And frankly, there are other sources of already-published content out there that are significantly better and incredibly well researched. Citing those, linking to them or providing a summary of them can strengthen your content marketing program.
In summary
You want to include curated content as part of your overall content marketing mix, but do it carefully and conservatively. If you don’t, you risk the ire of the search engines and potentially cease and desist notices.
